Mitchell Welch has been publishing creative work in Australian literary journals for more than ten years, including Antipodes, Arena, The Australian Poetry Journal, The Best of Australian Poems, Cordite, Meanjin, The Medical Journal of Australia, Overland, Rabbit, Short Fiction, Social Alternatives, Southerly and Text.

His first book, Vehicular Man, was published as part of the Rabbit Poets Series.

He was the inaugural winner of the Fair Australia Prize for Poetry in 2015, and has been long-listed, short-listed and/or highly commended for a number of awards including the ACU Poetry Prize, WB Yeats Poetry Prize for Australia, Judith Wright Poetry Prize and University of Canberra Vice Chancellor’s International Poetry Prize.

In 2022 and 2023 his work was shortlisted for the Arts Queensland Thomas Shapcott Prize for Poetry.

He volunteered as an editorial assistant for Overland from 2015-23, contributing poems, reviews and guest-editing an online poetry feature in 2019. He was an editorial committee member for N-Scribe from 2014-17, and was poetry editor of Ricochet from 2013-14.
